In an intimate setting at Permanent Record Roadhouse in Los Angeles, singer/songwriter Modern Oli plays to a room full of fans singing the lyrics right back to him. Oli Higginson, who performs under the moniker Modern Oli, is someone you’ll want to keep an eye on. The actor/singer is known for his recurring role as Footman John on Netflix’s Bridgerton, has branched out to explore music in the past five months.
An Intimate Setting
Playing a setlist of his latest hits and unreleased songs, the performance felt like Higginson bared his soul and left it all out on stage. The lyrics are deeply personal and relatable, and each song had me bopping my head to the beat. Higginson is not the type of artist who just stands in front of the mic and sings. He utilized the entire stage, switching between playing the keyboard and taking center stage while never forgetting to interact with the crowd. The energy was infectious.
There’s something special about being at a show with an intimate setting such as the Permanent Record Roadhouse. Every note struck deep, and you can’t help but connect with the artist when he is in such close proximity. Higginson’s energy never faltered, and his charismatic stage presence sealed the deal that this is an artist I will continue to keep an eye on.
Among the songs he performed, “Transatlantic,” “One of Those Faces,” and “People Pleaser” were some my favorite moments. If you’ve seen the music video for “People Please”, you’ll notice the same curly wig making a cameo at the show. The highlight of the night was when special guest Laura Marano took the stage to perform a duet covering Sombr’s “Back To Friends.” Their harmonies were heavenly.

During the show, Higginson mentioned this was only his fourth show ever. If he hadn’t said anything, I would have assumed that he’d be doing this much longer. Despite it being his fourth show, the singer never showed nervousness and always seemed at ease on stage. He also took the time to thank the band, with whom he played for the first time that night (after a very short rehearsal). The synergy was unreal.
There is something so special about witnessing an emerging artist who is on the trajectory to success. With his soulful vocals, infectious energy, and playful lyrics, it won’t be long before Modern Oli plays to a full arena. Even though he’s just at the beginning of his musical career, he has already grown a dedicated fanbase. His upcoming show at Pianos in New York City sold out in pre-sale within 24 hours.
