Trolls Band Together Goes All In On Boy Band Nostalgia – Movie Review

The third installment of Dreamwork’s Trolls franchise Trolls Band Together will be a fun and delightful watch for families, but it’s a special treat for those who grew up in the late 90s to early 2000s – during the era of the boybands.

“Trolls Better Together” stars the voice talents of Anna Kendrick as Poppy, Justin Timberlake as Branch, Zooey Deschanel as Bridget, Christopher Mintz-Plasse as King Gristle, Kunal Nayyar as Guy Diamond, and Keenan Thompson as Tiny Diamond. Joining the franchise are Eric André as John Dory, Troye Sivan as Floyd, David Diggs as Spruce, Kid Cudi as Clay, Amy Schumer as Velvet, Andrew Rannells as Veneer, and Camila Cabello as Viva.

Trolls Band Together Storyline

Poppy and Branch are official, and as they’re preparing for the royal wedding of Bridget and King Gristle Jr., an unexpected guest crashes the wedding. It turned out to be Branch’s oldest brother, John Dory, asking for his help to rescue their brother Floyd who had been captured by pop sensation duo Velvet and Veneer. They’re draining him of his troll magic in order to enhance their own musical abilities.

To Poppy’s surprise, Branch was once a part of “BroZone”, her favorite boy band. Brozone is made up of Branch and his brothers John Dory, Floyd, Spruce, and Clay. Due to overwhelming pressure to sing the perfect harmony and discourse, the group disbanded and Branch (a baby at the time) never saw his brothers again.

Branch, Poppy, John Dory, and Tiny Diamond are set off to reunite the brothers and rescue Floyd before it’s too late.

Boy Band Fans, This Is For You!

Fans of *NSYNC (or BSB, 98°, NKOTB, Otown, One Direction, etc) – this movie will feed your boy band nostalgia. Trolls Band Together leans heavily into the boy band theme and storyline, and with Justin Timberlake voicing Branch, it makes perfect sense. In fact, Justin found the perfect song to record with his real-life band members, called “Better Place”. The *NSYNC members even had a cameo in the movie, and had a hand in the design of their characters.

The Trolls movie franchise is known for its musical numbers and mash-ups. While not all the songs in the movie are boy band covers, there are quite a few, including *NSYNC’s debut single “I Want You Back.” Aside from songs, the dialogue has a ton of boy band references that’ll have you in stitches.

Final Thoughts

It’s no surprise that the Trolls franchise has been so successful, and Trolls Band Together reminds us exactly why it has such a large audience. The story is fun and lighthearted for all ages, but it doesn’t shy away from the emotional moments and characters facing the trauma of their past. The animators have built a vibrant world, integrating real-world toys like water beads into the environment and craft materials for the look of each troll.
