The Bride! Review – Jessie Buckley Is Electrifying in This Bold Retelling

Directed by Maggie Gyllenhaal, The Bride! reimagines a classic monster tale with gothic flair, emotional depth, and striking style. Set in 1930s Chicago, the story follows Frankenstein’s Monster (Christian Bale) as he seeks companionship from a brilliant scientist, played by Annette Bening. The result is the resurrection of a murdered young woman who is brought back to life as the Bride, portrayed by Jessie Buckley.

Buckley is nothing short of electric. She fully inhabits the chaos, romance, and fractured identity of a woman reborn. The film smartly gives us glimpses of her life before death, grounding the character in humanity before unleashing something far more unpredictable. One of the film’s most inspired choices is weaving in author Mary Shelley as a haunting internal presence, adding a meta layer to this bold retelling.

Visually, The Bride! is stunning. From shadow-drenched black-and-white sequences to intricate costume and makeup design that nods to the original iconography, every frame feels intentional. The chemistry between Buckley and Bale is magnetic – tender one moment, volatile the next. As the pair spiral into chaos while on the run, their dynamic evokes a twisted, gothic Bonnie and Clyde.

While the film occasionally leans more into the Monster’s emotional journey at times, the overall experience is thrilling, stylish, and surprisingly romantic. The Bride! is a daring reinvention that’s absolutely worth checking out—especially on the biggest screen possible.
