During this year’s New York Comic Con, attendees were treated to a first look at the upcoming “Super Mario Bros Movie”. Viewers at home also got to see the teaser trailer as it was broadcast via Nintendo Direct. This animated film is based on the world of Super Mario Bros. Nintendo and Illumination (Despicable Me, Secret Life of Pets) have teamed up for this film and it’ll be released worldwide by Universal Pictures.
Directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic who were collaborators on Teen Titans Go! Screenplay by Matthew Fogel (The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part). The film stars Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong, Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek, and Sebastian Maniscalco as Spike.
The Teaser Trailer
The trailer opens on an ice kingdom. Bowser’s floating island, dripping with scolding hot lava is closing in on an ice castle. Kamek appears to announce the arrival of the King Koopa himself – Bowser. Out from the flames, towering over his Koopa soldiers, Bowser makes his way toward the ice castle. The gates open to reveal a King penguin and his subjects, ready to defend their home.
As they pelt Bowser and his army with snowballs and ice blocks to no effect, Kamek appears again using magic to levitate and move the entire penguin troop and their king. Bowser proceeds to breathe fire on the ice castle, completely destroying it. Then it is revealed what he was after – a star. “I finally found it”, he says.
In the next scene, we see Mario shooting out of a green pipe, bouncing to-and-from mushroom and mushroom before tumbling to a stop. He seems unfamiliar with his surrounding. “What is this place?” he utters. As he reached out to touch a mushroom, Toad pops up to stop him.
Toad and Mario run towards Peach’s castle in the distance as Toad says “Mushroom Kingdom, here we come”. The trailer ends with a scene with Luigi being chased by Dry Bones as he makes his way into what looks like Bowser’s castle.
The movie will be released in theaters on April 7, 2023.
