Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning Movie Review

(L-R) Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames, Rebecca Ferguson, and Tom Cruise in "Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One"

After much delay due to the pandemic, the IMF team is finally back on the big screen. This time, the IMF team takes on an enemy that is invisible yet everywhere. Joining the Mission Impossible franchise are Hayley Atwell (Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness) as Grace, Pom Klementieff (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3) as Paris, and Esai Morales (Ozark) as Gabriel. Returning cast includes Tom Cruise (Top Gun: Maverick) as Ethan Hunt, Rebecca Ferguson (Dune) as Ilsa Faust, Simon Pegg (The Boys) as Benji, Ving Rhames (Mission Impossible: Fallout) as Luther, Henry Czerny (Scream VI) as Kittridge, and Vanessa Kirby (The Crown) as The White Widow.

The official synopsis for Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One is:

“In Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, Ethan Hunt and his IMF team embark on their most dangerous mission yet: To track down a terrifying new weapon that threatens all of humanity before it falls into the wrong hands. With control of the future and the fate of the world at stake, and dark forces from Ethan’s past closing in, a deadly race around the globe begins. Confronted by a mysterious, all-powerful enemy, Ethan is forced to consider that nothing can matter more than his mission — not even the lives of those he cares about most.”

Packed to the brim with jaw-dropping action sequences, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One has a hefty runtime of 2 hours and 36 minutes, making this movie the longest in the franchise so far. Performance by the cast is stellar, as expected, and there’s a good amount of mask reveals to satisfy the fans. The film also incorporated more humor than the past films, and while it’s appreciated, at times it felt awkward and out of place.
