“Echo” Trailer Promises A Darker, Grittier Show

Alaqua Cox as Maya Lopez in Marvel Studios' Echo.

The official trailer for Marvel’s “Echo” has arrived and sees the return of Alaqua Cox as the titular character Echo/Maya Lopez, as well as Vincent D’onofrio as Kingpin/Wilson Fisk. Both characters appeared in the Disney+ series “Hawkeye,” which starred Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye and Hailey Steinfeld as Kate Bishop.

The series is set to stream on both Disney+ and Hulu simultaneously – a first for a Marvel series – on January 10, 2024, with all 5 episodes available on the day of release, another first for the Marvel Disney+ series. The show will center around Echo following the event in “Hawkeye,” where she held Fisk at gunpoint, and as the camera pans away from the pair, we hear the gunshot.

Further, we’ll get a better look at Echo’s past and her relationship with Fisk, and which path she’ll follow after learning the truth about her father’s murder. In the trailer, Fisk is seen with an eyepatch as Echo stands before him. “You and I are the same, so who’s the monster?” asks Fisk.

Charlie Cox‘s Daredevil is also set to appear in the series, as he can be seen briefly in the trailer.

First Marvel Disney+ Series To Get A TV-MA Rating

Fans were surprised at some of the brutality in the trailer, as most MCU shows do not typically show violence, such as a headshot or a ton of blood. In series such as “Falcon and the Winter Soldier” and “Moon Knight,” the gore is more implied than clearly shown. “Echo” will be the first Disney+ Marvel series to receive a TV-MA rating.

At a press day for “Echo,” Brad Winderbaum, head of streaming, television, and animation, says, “It’s a little on the grittier side for Marvel, and shows the breadth of what Marvel is capable of. It is sort of a new direction for the brand, especially for Disney+.”

The series will also premiere under a new banner called “Marvel Spotlight,” which will include a new intro-logo and a score by award-winning composer Michael Giacchino (“Werewolf By Night“). The purpose of Marvel Spotlight is to set the series released under this category as a standalone series rather than connecting to the rest of the MCU.

The TV-MA rating could mean that future Disney+ shows like “Daredevil: Born Again” will retain their grittier root as viewers saw in the Netflix series.
