Review: Spy Thriller K-Drama “Tempest” Is Intriguing and Engaging

The upcoming spy thriller K-drama “Tempest” is set to premiere on Hulu on September 10, with the first three episodes releasing simultaneously. The series boasts an all-star cast, with Jun Ji-hyun and Gang Dong-won as leads. The series also stars Lee Mi-sook, Park Hae-joon, Kim Hae-sook, Oh Jung-se, Yoo Jae-myung, Lee Sang-hee, Joo Jong-hyuk, and Won Ji-an. “Tempest” also has a large cast of international actors, including John Cho, Christopher Gorham, Michael Gaston, Spencer Garrett, Alicia Hannah-Kim, Jacob Bertrand, Tom Lenk, and Brooke Smith.

Setting up the story and characters is extremely important in this drama, given its political and spy themes. Episode one felt a bit exposition-heavy, but with good reason. Every conversation between these characters gives viewers a glimpse of what this series is about to dive into – and just how entangled every person will be in this situation.

When Munju’s husband (and presidential candidate) Jinki is assassinated right in front of her, the show spins into an endless rabbit hole of theories, spy games, and action. There’s no telling which character is an ally or if they will inevitably stab Munju in the back for their own gain. This is what makes the show an addictive watch. Each episode reveals the motive for each character, including Jinik.

By having a large international cast, the story becomes even broader, bringing the United States into the political war. John Cho’s character shows the emotional and moral struggle between wanting to do what he believes is right versus what his superiors are telling him to do.

Perhaps the most intriguing part of the show is the relationship between Munju and San ho (Gang Dong-won). San Ho was initially reluctant to take on the role of bodyguard to Munju until he saw her determination to get to the bottom of why her husband was killed. Their story will keep viewers on the edge of their seats as their situation grows more dangerous.

“Tempest” is intense, intriguing, and will satisfy any spy thriller fan. The story and characters are well-written, and Jang Ji-hyun gives one of her best performances in her career.
