‘Joy Ride’ Is More Than The Raunchy And Scandalous Jokes

From left to right: Stephanie Hsu, Sabrina Wu, Ashley Park, and Sherry Cola in Lionsgate's "Joy Ride"

Adele Lim’s latest comedy, “Joy Ride” has been receiving glowing reviews since its premiere at SXSW in March. The movie stars Ashley Park (“Emily In Paris”), Sherry Cola (“Shortcomings”), Stephanie Hsu (“Everything Everywhere All At Once”), and Sabrina Wu. Written by Adele Lim, Cherry Chevapravatdumrong, and Teresa Hsiao.

The official plot for “Joy Ride” is:

When Audrey’s business trip to Asia goes sideways, she enlists the help of Lolo, her childhood best friend, Kat, a college friend, and Deadeye, Lolo’s eccentric cousin. Their epic, no-holds-barred experience becomes a journey of bonding, friendship, belonging and wild debauchery that reveals the universal truth of what it means to know and love who you are.

Much in the vein of other road trip comedies like “The Hang Over,” “Girls’ Trip,” and “Bridesmaids“, the movie features many scandalous and raunchy jokes, but underneath all the comedy lies a heartfelt and emotional story about the journey of self discovery and friendship. Lim found the perfect balance between comedy and heart, knowing when to end a joke when it has run its course.

While the movie is centered around Ashley Park’s character Audrey, the movie equally highlights all four characters. This is the first R-Rated comedy featuring four Asian female leads. This movie breaks the stereotype that Asian women are reserved and quiet and can, in fact, be the lead of a raunchy comedy.
