At first glance at the trailer for “Hypnotic”, it’s easy to compare it to the visual effects of Christopher Nolan‘s ‘Inception” as reality warp and bend around the main characters. However, that is about as similar as this movie gets. Directed by Robert Rodriguez (The Book of Boba Fett), “Hypnotic” sends detective Danny Rourke (Ben Affleck) on an intense cat-and-mouse chase after a mysterious man who is a powerful hypnotist.
Determined to find his missing daughter, Austin detective Danny Rourke finds himself spiraling down a rabbit hole investigating a series of reality-bending crimes where he will ultimately call into question his most basic assumptions about everything and everyone in his world. Aided by Diana Cruz, a gifted psychic, Rourke simultaneously pursues and is pursued by a lethal specter — the one man he believes holds the key to finding the missing girl — only to discover more than he ever bargained for
The performances are great and William Fichtner makes a great villain. Oftentimes, movies like this make the audience want to follow along and solve the case – but the lack of character development for Affleck’s Detective Danny Rourke and Alice Braga‘s Diana Cruz made the story feel thin and unsatisfying.
“Hypnotic” is now in theaters.
