The nostalgia hits hard in the first official trailer for X-Men 97, an animated series based on the original 90’s series. The show follows a group of mutants who use their powers to protect the world that fears them. The series will also present a set of unexpected and dangerous challenges for the X-men.

Along with the new trailer, an official poster has also been released, featuring a set of VHS.

The all-new animation embraces the same style in the original series but is refreshed. The trailer opens with the finale episode of the 90s cartoon, where the X-Men are gathered around Professor X in his final moments. “I’m grateful to have the chance to say goodbye,” said the professor as he closed his eyes, “I’m proud of you all… my X-Men.”

The trailer also shows off the brand new logo for Marvel Animation.

With the professor gone, Scott Summers, aka Cyclopes, encourages the mutants to continue their work, “The professor entrusted us with his dreams,” as citizens’ hate of the mutants grows more intense. The trailer teases a battle with Sentinels and Magneto potentially taking control of Xavier’s school. Sharp-eyed fans will also catch various Easter Eggs, like the Daily Bugle newspaper pages with headlines such as “Is Spider-man A Mutant?”
