Review: “Billie Eilish: Hit Me Hard and Soft – The Tour Live in 3D” Gives You the Best Seat in the House

Multi-award-winning singer/songwriter Billie Eilish, alongside Academy Award-winning director James Cameron, releases a new and innovative concert experience to the big screen. The movie captures her latest tour, “Hit Me Hard and Soft,” using the latest 3D technology to put the audience right at the concert.

As concert films continue to rise in popularity, what sets Billie Eilish’s movie a part is the 3D technology. There have been other concert films available in 3D, and even with VR headsets, but with James Cameron’s involvement, it pushes the quality even further than previous 3D concert films.

The picture quality is extremely crisp, to the point where it feels like you are right there on the concert floor, standing with the fans. There are certain shots from the audience in the seated sections that captured fans with their arms up during the songs. It looked as if it was the person in the row in front of you in the movie theater had their hands up instead of the movie. The same goes for when the confetti cannon goes off. There are moments where it feels like one can reach out and catch the confetti as they seem to be coming out of the screen.

No one does 3D movies as well as James Cameron, and the way he captured each performance and the excitement of the fans is exactly how a concert movie should be. There was a perfect balance of Eilish’s performances, behind-the-scenes interviews, and fans. Usually with a concert film, one of the main complaints is that it cuts away to the audience too often. Not with this movie. Every time it showed the fans, it was at the right moment to capture their emotions and excitement, and to show why they connect with Eilish’s music.

A Peek Behind the Curtains

The film also includes behind-the-scenes interviews with Eilish about how much she likes to be involved in the creative process of her tour, as well as this movie. She spoke proudly about how much she’s able to give input and make decisions for aspects of her tour – from audio/visual to lighting.

In the interview segments, Eilish spoke intimately about the importance of staying true to her own style and not being swayed by the pressure of societal norms.

The film also gives a peek behind the curtain when it comes to the tour’s production. The camera follows Eilish under the stage as she rushes from one side of the stage into a pop-up toaster lift – launching her high in the air before she lands on a platform stage. These behind-the-scenes portions blends perfectly with the performance footage and give a complete experience of what goes into a massive production such as the “Hit Me Hard and Soft” tour.

Worth the Watch?

As someone who has seen quite a few concert movies, “Billie Eilish: Hit Me Hard and Soft – The Tour Live in 3D” is well worth every penny. You’ll feel like you are right there at the concert – whether onstage with Billie or at the barricade with the fans. The 3D quality is top notch, and truly gives you the best seat in the house for this tour. The film moves smoothly from performances to behind-the-scenes to audience reactions. It truly captures the concert-going experience.
