Blue Beetle Focuses On The Reyes Family Dynamic

Xolo Maridueña as Jaime Reyes/Blue Beetle

DC’s Blue Beetle marks the first time for the Latino superhero to make his appearance on the big screen. Directed by Angel Manuel Soto, the story follows Jaime Reyes as he comes into contact with an ancient alien artifact known as the Scarab. Once Jaime fuses with the Scarab, it grants him incredible powers but puts him and his family in danger.

The film is packed with incredible fight sequences and special effects, but it is the Reyes family that steals the spotlight. Usually, a superhero’s origin story has the character facing his challenges alone. In Blue Beetle, Jaime’s family is with him every step of the way no matter how dangerous the situation. This created many heartfelt moments throughout the film, as well as comedic moments from Jamie’s grandmother.

Unfortunately, the villain of the movie was quite superficial – a power-hungry CEO who will stop at nothing to obtain the Scarab in order to power her One Man Army Crops (OMAC) project. However, the focus remained on Jaime and his journey, and Xolo Mariduena’s performance captures the personality and charm of Jaime Reyes perfectly from comic books and animated shows. Blue Beetle was a solid debut for the DC superhero.
